History of Missouri Wines and the Resurgence of Wineries in MO

Before prohibition, Missouri was the country's second leading wine producer, behind only New York.  Today, a new generation of well-educated winemakers, healthier lifestyles, and the increasing consumer demand for locally brewed spirits has once again catapulted Missouri's wine industry into the international spotlight. Growing 70 percent since 2001, Missouri now ranks 11th in the nation. Missouri wines are once again winning national and international acclaim.

Caledonia,  MO

Caledonia Wine Cottage is located in "Ramsey House" on historic Main Street in Caledonia.  Built in 1824 as a "stage stop inn", the structure is on the National Register of Historic Places. The old inn was used during the Civil War as a hospital.  Around every corner of the Wine Cottage is a bit of history. Purchased in 2006 and recently renovated, the Caledonia Wine Cottage now serves a selection of local Missouri wines and specialty micro-brews.  They offer local cheeses and sausage, as well as Amish products, jams, jellies and more.  Enjoy outdoor patio seating and entertainment on the weekends.  ~ 11 miles north of Elephant Rocks on Hwy 21

Farmington, MO Winery

Take a short drive to Twin Oaks Vineyard and Winery in Farmington, Missouri.  The Hutson Family has spent years cultivating and maintaining their 180 acre farm, with 25 acres in vines.   They made their dream a reality by producing their own commercial wine in 2006.  Their tasting room sits in the middle of their vineyard ~ a lovely spot to go for a relaxing afternoon where you can enjoy their delicious wines or a glass of cold premium beer. You may wish to tour the vineyards and take lunch under the 350-400 year old Oak trees, for which their vineyard is named. The inviting porch has a perfect view of the vines and the tranquil lake. Let the sounds of the fountain wash over you as you savor the panoramic view from the large patio. Enjoy live entertainment by fine area musicians throughout the season.  ~ just 24 miles away

Fredericktown, MO Winery

Vance Vineyard and Winery is a small, but growing, family-owned business. This area saw an influx of German immigrants in the early 1800’s who were searching for a homeland that reminded them of their beloved “Old Country”. The rolling hills and clean rivers beckoned to them and they cleared the land of trees, stumps and rocks and planted their crops. The “Old Schulte Farm” is now home to Vance Vineyard and Winery. The tasting room construction is representative of the German architectural style, as are the entry towers and the plantings. Visitors to the Winery will easily imagine themselves in the heart of German wine country. It houses a banquet/meeting room, a hearth room with piano bar, and a small gift shop. Several balconies and patio areas, one with an outdoor stone fireplace, provide ample and comfortable seating for viewing the lake, the historic old silo, and of course, the vineyard.   Enjoy their wines with a selection of cheese, sausage, crackers and fruit.
